Chief's Minute
OA Introductory Letter
Hello fellow Arrowmen. My name is Ray Heberer, and I have the great honor of taking up the position of lodge chief for the Achpateuny Lodge. I have a fair understanding of the difficulties that this position will come with, but I believe that I have the necessary experience and motivation to do a good job leading our very unique international lodge.
I am an Eagle Scout from the Taiwan District. In my Eagle Project, I orchestrated a 9 day construction of a security wall in a Cambodian orphanage. The excessive planning I did for this endeavor, starting from 9 months prior to its completion gave me good experience in setting and carrying out long term goals. I am active in scouting as a member of a Venture Crew, and I am also registered in a Troop, where I make occasional appearances, most recently in a Court of Honor to give a speech about the OA’s purpose.
My experiences in the outdoors include, but are not limited to: over 100 nights of camping, Northern Tier, Arrow Corps 5, Fuji, Jade, Snow, and more mountains, and backpacking trips around, and even across Taiwan. In the summer times, I serve as an instructor for outdoor skill merit badges such as Wilderness Survival and Pioneering in the Inland Northwest Council’s Camp Easton.
During my time as lodge chief, I will strive to, among other things:
- Establish better communication throughout our lodge within and across its numerous land areas
- Meet the requirements to earn the Quality Lodge Award
- Open up more opportunities for youth to take an active role in the leadership of the lodge and chapters.
Aside from Scouts, I am also very academically focused, and I have an interest in science and literature. I participate in cross country and track and field – where I throw the shot put, javelin and discus. My other large interest is music. I’m in my schools Orchestra and Jazz band, and I play Guitar, Piano, Upright and Electric bass as my main instruments. I put much of my time and effort into my occupation as a metal musician. Very recently I have begun to share my works on youtube under the name “halfbreedrayze.”
I hope to have a great year and a look forward to seeing you, perhaps in this months Klondike in Okinawa, or in Japan’s May Ordeal/Fellowship. Have a happy Lunar New Year!
